{"id":4744,"date":"2022-09-09T12:50:08","date_gmt":"2022-09-09T12:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pcauganda.org\/?p=4691"},"modified":"2026-04-20T16:04:54","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T13:04:54","slug":"pcau-wins-double-at-the-7th-international-african-palliative-care-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pcauganda.org\/new-progress\/pcau-wins-double-at-the-7th-international-african-palliative-care-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"PCAU Double Awarded at the 7th International African Palliative Care Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Palliative Care Association of Uganda was not only recognized for its support and contribution to improving access to Palliative Care services in Africa but also for the best oral presentation on integrating palliative care data into the national Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) during the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pcauganda.org\/new-progress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC_0431.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4693\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><strong>PCAU team led by the Country Director, Mark Donald Mwesiga receiving an award for the best Oral Presentation at the 7th International African Palliative Care Conference at Mestil Hotel, Kampala<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The African Palliative Care Association (APCA) together with the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA) hosted a hybrid 7<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;International African Palliative Care Conference from 24<sup>th<\/sup> to 26<sup>th<\/sup> August 2022 at Mestil Hotel, Kampala-Uganda for physical attendees where PCAU participated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the conference sessions, critical discussions were held on palliative care services in Africa by Palliative Care Organizations\u2019 leaders and stakeholders across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt a country level, palliative care is greatly hindered by the low levels of awareness. Even to the honorable Members Ugandan parliament, we have had to hold sensitization meetings to talk about palliative care and its importance\u201d Mark Mwesiga Donald Mwesiga, Country Director. PCAU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe major challenge we face as Africa is difficulty integrating Palliative Care into the existing health care systems.\u201d Dr. Luyirika Emmanuel, Executive Director of the African Palliative Care Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pcauganda.org\/new-progress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC_0213.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4694\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><strong>PCAU Country Director, Mark Donald Mwesiga and APCA Executive Director, Dr. Emmanual Luyirika on a panel of Palliative Care Organizations&#8217; Leaders at the Conference <\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hon. Margaret Muhanga, State Minister of Health, appreciated the partnership the Ministry has with the national association, Palliative Care Association of Uganda to accredit Health facilities in Uganda. PCAU together with the Ministry of Health accredit specially trained palliative care nurses and clinical officers to prescribe morphine, and a total of 232 facilities had been certified by July 2022. This responsibility is still left to only medical officers in many African countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus WHO Director General applauded PCAU for putting Uganda among the leading palliative care service providers in the continent and reiterated World Health Organization\u2019s commitment to supporting palliative care in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGood palliative care is not limited to end-of-life care. If planned at an early stage, it can prevent unnecessary intervention save costs, and increase the quality of life for patients and their families.
