Dr. Agasha Doreen Birungi

Chief Executive Director, Hospice Africa Uganda

Dr. Agasha is the Chief Executive Director at Hospice Africa Uganda which is a thriving 28-year-old Palliative Care organization. She is a medical doctor with a Master’s degree in Public Health and a Post Graduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation. She has worked with different organizations over the last 15 years gaining extensive knowledge and experience in leadership and management.

Dr. Agasha has led and continues to lead HAU and its teams through the COVID-19 pandemic with its related challenges. Despite the pandemic, HAU continued to deliver palliative care services at all three sites in Kampala, Mobile Hospice Mbarara, and Little Hospice Hoima.

HAU’s Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa continued to support Diploma, Degree, and Masters Students from within and abroad in Africa through their education and research using already established online platforms. HAU launched its first online health professionals course for palliative care initiators attracting participants from all over sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Agasha attributes these accomplishments and her ability to navigate during this challenging season to walking with and trusting a very loving God who among many provisions blessed her with a committed and self-driven team at HAU.

This wife and mother, in all her simplicity, is an emerging leader in the health sector whose aspiration is to see equity in access to healthcare for all Ugandans. She is a good listener and a very fast learner with a very high commitment to causes that she embarks on.
