Professor Dr Anne Merriman

Founder, Hospice Africa Uganda

Professor Dr Anne Merriman MBE, introduced palliative care to Uganda in 1993 when she commenced Hospice Africa Uganda the model for Hospice Africa, with the vision of “Palliative care for all in need in Africa”.
She was key in the foundation of the Palliative Care Association of Uganda, African Palliative Care Association, and Makerere Mulago Palliative Care Unit.

She had a huge impact on the introduction and development of palliative care in Singapore, founded Homecare, later to become the Hospice Care Association in Singapore which is one of the best services in the world.

Anne has spent over 40 years working in Africa including 10 years where she served as a missionary doctor in Nigeria.

Anne Merriman is a Nobel Peace Prize nominee but has won several other awards and notable is the Presidential Distinguished Service Award for the Irish Abroad.
