The SHiNE Child Program continues to bring hope and healing to children from impoverished families in Southwestern Uganda who are living with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. With donor support, children are provided with transportation to hospitals, funds for medical investigations, and nutritional support during their medical visits. These interventions are designed to prevent treatment abandonment and promote adherence to cancer care, leading to improved outcomes and a higher quality of life. Every small effort made is a hope that a child’s life can be saved, and each contribution directly transforms despair into survival, education, and dignity.
Gideon’s Story
One story that captures the heart of SHiNE this year is that of Gideon, a 14-year-old boy from Nyakizinga in Mitooma District. Gideon developed cancer in his leg at a very young age, beginning as a small wound that grew into a large, painful tumor. For a long time, his family had no means to seek treatment. His turning point came when a Palliative Care Nurse in Bushenyi District discovered him and enrolled him in the SHiNE program.
Through this support, Gideon’s father, Wilson, was able to take him to the Uganda Cancer Institute in Mbarara for investigations, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. The program also provided monthly transport support, ensuring they could reach the hospital consistently. Earlier this year, Gideon’s leg began to swell again, causing severe pain. SHiNE stepped in once more, ensuring he received hospital care where his leg was amputated. Despite this difficult journey, Gideon continues to receive support, and his father remains deeply grateful, saying: “I appreciate the support given to me from PCAU. Without it, I would not have managed to take Gideon for treatment. I ask for continued support because Gideon has not yet healed.”
Gideon’s story reminds us that donor generosity is central to SHiNE’s mission. Your contributions fuel cancer navigation that prevents abandonment, strengthens family resilience through transport, nutrition, and counseling, and restore dignity to children facing life-limiting illnesses. Together, we are proving that community-based cancer navigation saves lives.
As we move forward, SHiNE carries the conviction that every small effort we make today can save the life of a child tomorrow, and donor support remains the cornerstone of this mission, transforming contributions into survival, education, and hope.
