From Uncertainty to Opportunity: Mildred’s inspiring journey to becoming a Midwife

Mildred on her graduation Day

Mildred’s story is one of perseverance, determination, and hope, a shining example of how adversity can be transformed into opportunity. Born in Masaka District, Uganda, Mildred grew up in a family struggling with poverty and illness, and her dreams of returning to school seemed out of reach. Through the support of the Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU), Mildred received school fees support and a renewed chance to pursue her future. This year, she graduated and is now a midwife.

From a young age, Mildred faced many challenges; her father’s whereabouts were unknown, her grandfather was bedridden from a stroke, and her grandmother battled hypertension. With her mother as the sole provider through peasant farming, Mildred took on the responsibility of caregiving while trying to pursue her education. After completing senior six, Mildred couldn’t continue with education, as she had to sacrifice and allow her younger siblings a chance at basic education.

Although the weight of this decision was huge, Mildred remained determined and never gave up on her dream of continuing her education when the chance came.

In 2022, PCAU offered Mildred the opportunity to return to school.  Through our support, Mildred received the financial support to resume her education and emotional and psychological support to pursue her dreams.

Mildred enrolled for a Midwifery course, and she has now graduated as a Midwife in January 2025, marking the start of a new chapter where she can now use her skills to serve her community. She is determined to obtain her practicing license and start her service immediately. Mildred also dreams of advancing her studies in Clinical Medicine to broaden her impact and make an even greater difference in the lives of others.
