On April 24, 2024, PCAU hosted a community daycare event for 52 older persons in the Lweza-Kajjansi Area. The event was part of the lined-up activities for the compassionate community program which PCAU is piloting in partnership with Lweza Community Health Program and Tibah International School. The daycare was aimed at supporting older people’s need for socialization, reuniting older friends, and fostering belonging and togetherness. There was also a health checkup for everyone on a range of health conditions. 

The team of health workers and social workers provided focused counseling to some of the older people in need, essential medical supplies, and quality time for conversations among others.  Some of the older people continued to provide medical care since the event coincided with a health camp. This brought joy to older persons and shed light on pressing issues they face, including limited access to healthcare, social isolation, and inadequate housing.

One of the older people while expressing gratitude, said:
“Receiving free services from kind people is a shock to me, and I’m grateful for the support.”

Several people from the community joined this event to offer volunteer support to the older people. They supported those who found difficulty walking by using wheelchairs, offered to serve meals, set up the tents, and transported them back home after the event. This community-driven care demonstrates the power of compassion. It has instilled togetherness among community members, and together, we can create a more compassionate society where everyone thrives and feels valued.

This activity among others that PCAU conducts in communities is intended to empower people and communities on their right to palliative care. At these events, PCAU staff sensitize people about palliative care and their right to demand for these services. PCAU intends to extend the partnership with different schools and community-based organizations to create more awareness of palliative care.
