PCAU shares Uganda’s experience with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

In August 2024, we shared our experience supporting expanding access to palliative care in Uganda with a team from Hospital General Reference Charité Maternelle/Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The team visited the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) extended to PCAUI to learn about the role of Civil society in coordinating and supporting the government to strengthen palliative care as a component of comprehensive care.

The Hospital General Reference Charité Maternelle team, led by Dr. Jules Kafitiye, plans to set up a cancer treatment center in the Kivu region. The discussions at the engagement also underscored the role of the multidisciplinary team when providing holistic care for children and adults with cancer together with their families. This collaboration followed another visit by a team of Heamato–oncology fellows from the UCI. PCAU will offer technical support as part of the Memorandum of understanding between Uganda and the DRC team led by the Ministry of Health.
