Special Hearts to Nurture Every Child (SHiNE Child) Program

SHiNE program began in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, when we all faced lockdowns. A special group of vulnerable children who were undergoing cancer treatment faced double jeopardy. They wre locked down, they missed scheduled appointments for their treatment.

During a recent workshop, the palliative care nurses shared stories of children whose lives have been transformed, while also pointing out challenges such as funding delays, stigma, myths about cancer, and hospital gaps. We emphasized accountability and agreed that community stakeholders such as Village Health Teams, herbalists, church leaders, schools, and local councils play a critical role in early identification and in reducing stigma. We also mapped out donor engagement strategies, including partnerships with Rotary and Lions Clubs, universities, banks, and churches.

As PCAU, we are committed to expanding coverage to offer support to many more sick children, strengthening accountability, and advocating for improved hospital services. Above all, we reaffirmed that children living with cancer and other chronic illnesses deserve dignity, care, and joy.

Stand with us in bringing hope, dignity, and care to children battling cancer and chronic illness. Your support can make the difference between suffering in silence and receiving compassionate, life-changing care.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Des Moines International Eucharistic Community for welcoming us to speak on Sunday, February 1st, 2026. This opportunity allowed us to share our mission with the congregation, and we are thankful for the generous First Sunday collection and the SHiNE grant support, both of which provided the essential resources for our ongoing work.
