Gratitude Reflections from the 5th Uganda Conference on Cancer & Palliative Care

The 5th Uganda Conference on Cancer and Palliative Care, held in September  at Speke Resort Munyonyo, was a memorable gathering marked by learning, collaboration, and renewed commitment to improving patient care. Jointly organized by the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) and the Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU) in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the three-day meeting drew over 450 delegates from eight countries, making it one of the largest platforms for cancer and palliative care engagement in the region.

With 143 abstracts, 81 oral presentations, 58 posters, 17 plenary sessions, and two legacy lectures, the conference showcased both scientific advancements and powerful stories from the field. We celebrated excellence in research, honoring Ms. Daisy Wannyana from Victoria University for the best oral abstract and Mr. Ian Batanda from Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital for the best poster presentation.

At the heart of this year’s theme, “Embracing Uniqueness and Empowering Communities,” was the spirit of gratitude.

We acknowledge with appreciation the dedication of community health workers, caregivers, survivors, and leaders whose passion continues to make care more compassionate and accessible. PCAU was especially encouraged by the strong representation from member hospices and palliative care organizations across Uganda.

Our deepest thanks go to global partners,  the Center for Hospice Care, the American Cancer Society, and HelpAge , and many others  whose support enriched knowledge-sharing and meaningful dialogue throughout the conference. As delegates reflected on the journey ahead, they pledged to expand early detection and prevention efforts, strengthen leadership in palliative care, confront stigma and misinformation, and leverage digital innovation to ensure no patient is left behind. We move forward with gratitude, confidence, and renewed energy  committed to transforming cancer and palliative care delivery in Uganda and beyond.
