Honouring a Champion of Compassion:     Dr. Anne Merriman

The passing of Dr. Anne in May this year marked the end of an era, yet her legacy continues to illuminate the path she faithfully set. As the Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU) reflects on its highlights in 2025, we pause with profound respect to honour one of the most influential pioneers of palliative care in Uganda.  As a Pioneer Whose Vision Reshaped Care , Dr. Anne firmly believed that palliative care is a human right. She saw beyond medical needs she saw the person, the family, and the spirit. Her influence challenged systems, shaped policies, and helped Uganda embrace palliative care as an essential part of healthcare. Her leadership elevated palliative care from a little-known service to a nationally and internationally recognized necessity. Whether in boardrooms, hospitals, or rural communities, she tirelessly advocated for the most vulnerable.

Dr. Anne’s work transformed countless lives. Patients found comfort instead of pain; families discovered hope during difficult moments; health professionals benefited from her training and mentorship; caregivers gained skills rooted in compassion; and advocates were emboldened to speak for those without a voice. She nurtured leaders and inspired thousands to view care through empathy, respect, and humanity. Her efforts strengthened policies, improved standards, and positioned Uganda as a leader in compassionate care.

Her impact endures in every patient eased from pain, every caregiver empowered with knowledge, every health worker practicing compassionate care, every policy influenced by her vision, and every step PCAU takes toward equitable access to palliative care. Her contribution is written not only in documents and strategies, but in the lives uplifted by her dedication. At PCAU, her values remain our compass, guiding our actions and advocacy.

Today, we honour a woman whose compassion became a movement and whose life transformed how the world understands dignity. Dr. Anne may have completed her earthly journey, but her light continues to guide our work, shape our vision, and inspire hope in every life touched by palliative care.
