The Palliative Care Education and Research Consortium (PcERC) was established in 2017 by a group of professionals as part of the work of the Makerere/Mulago palliative care unit which has been in existence since 2008 to support the further development and access for palliative care. We work in conjunction with the Makerere/Mulago Palliative Care Unit (MMPCU) to deliver an integrated clinical service, carrying out research, advocacy, training, and capacity building in collaboration with partners.

What makes our services so unique?
We offer integrated hospital-based palliative care services, including Mulago National Specialized Referral Hospital (MNSRH) and Kirrudu National Referral Hospital (KNRH), where 45% of the patients need palliative care (PC) We are a specialist unit that manages patients with complex needs but work with generalist PC practitioners (link nurses, Medical doctors, pharmacists, social workers, etc) and focus on empowering others using a novel link clinician or palliative care ambassador approach to scale up access to PC.
We also have a significant role in training, research, and advocacy for palliative care in Uganda and beyond working with national and international partners.
