Palliative Care Services for the Deaf

The Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU) is working in partnership with the Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD) to advocate for improved access to palliative care services care for the deaf. There exists a communication gap between the deaf and most health workers who cannot use sign language. PCAU initiated the engagement with the Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD) in 2015 when the first palliative care non-health professional’s training for the deaf was held.

PCAU and UNAD agreed to work together to develop a Deaf Awareness Module for inclusion in the Health Professionals Palliative Care Training Manual. This process was started in 2017 and
PCAU and UNAD working with the Ministry of Health have developed a Deaf Awareness Manual. It is a tool used to conduct awareness sessions for Health workers in Uganda’s regional referral Hospitals.
