Today we share the story of Gertrude, a determined and resilient young woman from Bunyoro region whose journey shows the power of support and perseverance. Her story reminds us that with the right help, dreams can become reality and that we all have a role to play in making this happen. After all, it takes a village to raise a child.
Gertrude’s journey began at a tender age when she took on the responsibility of caring for her mother suffering from a life-limiting illness. In the face of this challenge, she dedicated herself to providing comfort and support, effectively balancing her caregiving duties with her desire to study. In 2015, Gertrude’s mother succumbed to cervical cancer, leaving Gertrude and her siblings with an uncertain future and little hope of returning to school. Their father, Bernard, a peasant farmer, struggled to provide for the family, including school fees, deepening their hardships

Fortunately, in 2016, Gertrude’s life began lighting up when she became a beneficiary of the Road to Hope program. With our support, she was able to complete her Primary Seven (P.7) education and transitioned to secondary school, where she continued to excel academically and take on leadership roles. Throughout her education, she demonstrated leadership skills, resilience, and determination, serving as the minister of religious affairs at her school.
Recognizing her passion and skills, Gertrude pursued vocational training in tailoring, a path that would later become the foundation of her success. With the knowledge and experience gained through the training, she started her own boutique, which has since flourished. Gertrude’s success has inspired her to give back to the community. Today, Gertrude is not only a successful entrepreneur but also a mentor and role model, empowering others in her community with the skills she has acquired.

Gertrude’s boutique has become a steady source of income, allowing her to support her father and siblings back home. She has also diversified her income streams by starting a piggery farm, initially purchasing two piglets, which have since become a sustainable livelihood venture.

For Gertrude, her style and self-expression always hinted that she would one day become a community fashionista. What began as a dream has now become a reality, thanks to our child-caregiver program. She has built a future of independence and hope, inspiring others to persevere so that they too can succeed
A Grateful Heart
Gertrude credits the Road to Hope program for transforming her life, describing the program as her “savior” and a “caring partner.” Her journey from adversity to achievement serves as a powerful reminder of how support and determination can change lives.
